Magnetic Silver Grey

Would you believe that one of the top search terms for people coming to my blog is 'magnetic nail polish'.  So if you just googled magnetic nail polish and came here, welcome!

I recently hauled myself three new magnetic colours from the same place that I have purchased my previous magnetic polishes (Nail Art and More in Austria).  This one is called Magnetic Silver Grey.  When the  polish is applied it is a neutral taupe gray colour, but when the magnetic is applied it pulls through a great gold colour beneath and leaves very light silvery magnetic lines.

I used the star magnet for this design, and like always I had a little trouble lining it up perfectly on my nail, but I still got a finish I was very happy with.

This is a really pretty magnetic polish.  The other two colours I got were Khaki and Pigeon blue.  I'm worried the khaki might look a bit poopie, but they didn't have a colour chart, so I'll just have to wait and see.

I also got two more magnets, one with horizontal lines and one with vertical lines.  I'll use them on the other two colours. 

LCN Magnetic Nail Polish in Green Temptation

Good morning, Dear Reader!

Today I have something a little different for you, one of LCN's magnetic nail polishes.  It's the green one, named Green Temptation.

It came with two magnets, so I tried both out.  I'd gotten reasonably good at using magnetic polishes with the magnet on the bottle, and it turns out that I'm not nearly so good at using a loose one.  When it's on the bottle, there's a little ledge to anchor the tip of the nail to hold it really close to the magnet, and that's handy.  Using these loose ones, it's hard to get and stay close enough to the polish without bumping into it, which you'll see I did to two nails.  I applied base coat to all ten nails, then a coat of Green Temptation to one nail, did the magnet thing to it for about twenty seconds, and moved on to the next nail until I was done, then top coated all ten.  I used a diagonal stripe magnet on all but my ring fingers, and there I used a star magnet.  These didn't turn out so great...

Another magnetic holo franken - purple

I was going to show my next favourite Ozotic pro multichrome polish, but to be honest, they are so dupey of the Artform ones, I'm just a bit bored with writing about them.  Not bored with the polishes, they are just amazing, I just can't be stuffed writing stuff up about them.  My bad.

Instead I have another magnetic holographic polish today.  This one is purple.  ** umm der, did I really need to tell you this was purple **

This was made using half magnetic polish, then equal parts of Artform holographic polish in Mauve, OPI DS Original and China Glaze LOL.  My franken is only in a small 5ml bottle, so I didn't feel too bad about frankening with my beloved DS Original or LOL.  Plus I was confident it would work perfectly because I have done it a few times already with other colours.

Also, cause its still Thursday in Hawaii and on the west coast of the Americas (you crazy people living a day behind us Aussies - at least you will always know that the world wont end today, because it's already tomorrow in Australia (I know, old joke, sorry)) Where was I, oh yes, you still have just under 6 hours to enter my franken polish contest.

I have also decided to increase the size of my pictures by just a tad.  I don't bother making my pictures clickable, mainly because I never bother clicking on other peoples images, and I would rather save the storage space in my profile to add more pictures.  Hopefully the size increase wont screw up my template design.

Magnetic holo franken

After my last post I had to don my white coat a try to franken up a magnetic holographic polish.

I chose to do a blue franken because I have most holographic polishes in blue, and if it didn't work then I had only used up a common colour in my stash.

So here it is.  I only mixed up a tiny bit (about 3ml all up), in case it didn't work, but the ratios were, 1/2 magnetic polish, 1/4 OPI DS Glamour, 1/4 Nfu Oh 65.

The mixed colour was gorgeous.  A holoie cornflour blue.  Then the big test, did it still work with the magnets?

Yes, it did.  Not as pronounced as it is on its own, but it was definitely magnetic.

Here is a comparison swatch of just the magnetic polish next to my franken.

If I hadn't added the Nfu Oh 65, and just used DS Glamour, it would have been darker, but I really wanted a bit of linear holo in the mix too.

I think I will definitely do more of these.  My next will probably be a mix of my two favourite purples.  I'm just not sure if Im prepared to franken with my OPI DS Original.  Other combos I could do are:

Black magnetic with Lets to it in 3D or Nfu Oh 61

Green magnetic with L8R G8R or Artform green holo.

Red magnetic with Artform red holo

So its nothing like what I would like a 'real' magnetic holo to do, but its still beautiful.

Magnetic Bottle Green

Here comes another one, just like the other ones.  As you can see, the team at Nail Art and More have come through with great customer service and shipped my missing bottle green magnetic polish in record time.

This polish is truly amazing.  The rich green colour that comes through with the magnet is just awesome.  And another thing, this is just one coat!!  Yep how is that for pigment. Also wear on these is great.  I had a massive cleaning day today, including steam cleaning the front of all the kitchen cupboards and the splash back.  I didn't wear any gloves and I'm so happy cause I only have a tiny bit of tip wear, no chips nothing!

This polish dries really fast, and one thing I have learnt with these magnetic polishes is that you need to apply a thickish coat and quickly apply the magnet.  Otherwise it dries too fast and you don't get the full effect of the design anywhere that is already dry.

I've just noticed on their site that they are now selling these polishes in mini 5ml bottles (4.75€) as well as the 11ml ones (8.95€) and you can take 20% off those prices because they include tax. Given the excellent pigmentation in these, you could certainly be happy with a mini bottle.

Magnetic polishes - Purple and Rust Red

Here I have two more of my new magnetic polishes from Nail Art and More.  This one is called Purple and its super pretty.  The bottle colour is the same as the pale colour on the nail, then when you use the magnet it brings our the darker purple colour.

These polishes have the most beautiful colours in them.  This one has a blue, pink and purple shimmer which can be seen the pic below.

My application of the magnets is getting much better too.

Here is Rust Red. Again the bottle colour is closer to the pale colour on the nail, then with the magnet the darker rust colour lifts out.

I think I prefer the lines magnet to the star one, maybe because its a little more forgiving with bad alignment. 

If you don't get the star magnet lined up correctly on the nail it looks pretty shoddy.

As promised, here are the magnets and the positioning tool.

The base of the positioning tool has a little target on it so you know where to put your finger. 

You then tread the magnet design you want to use onto the fork and position it at the right height for your nail.  I then paint my nail while its still on the target and immediately place the fork, with the magnet, over my finger and hold for 10 seconds.

There you have it.  I'm now just waiting for my Green polish that was missing to turn up, and then to go shopping on their site again, as they have told me there will be seven new colours on their site in the next couple of weeks.

Magnetic Nail Polish - SWEET!

Oooh, oooh, oooh, I'm so excited to share with you my new magnetic nail polishes.  I bought these magnetic polishes off an Austrian website - http://www.nailart-und-mehr.de/. The down side is that I bought five of these polishes, but they only sent me four.  I have sent them an email about it so will wait and see if they come through with the goods.

This post shows two of the colours, black and night blue.  I also bought 'russet' which is red, bottle green and purple.  The green is the one they didn't send!

For those of you that don't know about magnetic nail polish, what you do is paint your nail, and then, working very quickly, while the polish is still wet, you position a magnet over the nail and hold it still for about 10 seconds.  When you move the magnet, the polish has set with a fancy pattern in it.

I bought both their magnet designs, which you have to purchase separately.  One creates lines and the other a starburst.  I couldn't decide which to do for this mani, so I did both.

I actually wore the blue polish first, and below is my first attempt at doing the magnets, not great, but you get the idea.  I was a little excited and rushed the whole application.

The application of these polishes was great. They dry really quick, which can make it tricky to get the magnet in place quickly enough.  Even without using the magnet these were beautiful colours. A really great nail polish!!

I'll post the other colours when I wear them and will photo the magnets too.

So what do you think, do you just love this idea like me, or are they a bit gimmicky.

Magnetic Blue Curacao

I normally don't wear blue nail polish cause I don't think it looks good on me, but I wanted to try it out today.

I'm still not sure if I like it :( I don't own many blues only 3

In the blue department I own Magnetic Blue Curacao and the other 2 are from the Essence twin collection I only have those cause they carry my mom and grandpa's name on them :)

I used Magnetic Blue Curacao 2 coats and for the strip's & dots I used Agnes B. Blanc. Pic before clean up.

I painted my nails with Essence Twin joe 2 coats. Then put afew dots of each color on a piece of paper and dipped my dotting tool into the colors and randomly place the dots on my nails.

Splatter your nails

Hi ladies, I'm feeling alot better today and guess what the sun is out, so i wanted to do a fun mani today. This is the first konad that finally worked for me.

I was so excited about this mani after I was done and seen it worked I got up and did the snoopy dance lol

L'Oreal Star Magnet Red

Good afternoon, Dear Reader!

The mailman arrived nice and early this morning, and saved me from my resentment toward Yves Saint Laurent. I had a package containing some L'Oreal Star Magnets that I was able to get for a much better price than when they were originally released, so I could pick up the Red and Purple that I had to pass on previously due to their prohibitive original cost.

You'd think I'd go for Purple first, but the Red was so striking that after accomplishing a few things this morning, I changed my manicure to it. I'll show you the results and then tell you how they work, in case you don't know, after the pictures.

This is two coats of L'Oreal Star Magnet Red.

I think this is the best I've done with a magnetic polish. The right hand turned out better, all nails perfect, but we've recently been reminded of what a poor job I do taking pictures of it, so I cannot prove that to you!

Here's how it works: there's iron in the polish, and a magnet attached to the bottle cap. Here's a close up picture of the magnet, which I'll refer to in the directions below.

To do a manicure, the first coat goes on as usual. I know to stretch these, since they're small, some people match the color and use regular polish for the first coat. Since I have not done that, I cannot tell you how well it works. I always use the magnetic polish for both. The second coat is where the magnet come in. In the picture, it's the little circular part on the top-facing side (in the picture - facing the top of this page) of the black attachment, parallel to the side of the bottle. I have not read actual directions for the Star Magnet brand, I go by the directions for the Lancome Le Magnetique brand of magnetic polish, and have modified the time with the magnet to what works best in my experience.

So here's how I do coat number two:

1. Paint the first nail as usual.

2. Quickly close the nail polish bottle tightly.

3. To use the magnet, I hook the center of my freshly painted nail on the crescent-shaped ridge at the bottom of the magnet attachment. Do you see it there in the picture? It's like a little shelf with a ridge to place your nail properly. Having centered the nail on the ridge, I raise the rest of the nail to be parallel to the magnet (and thus the bottle cap).

4. Hold there, very still, for 20-25 seconds. The Lancome directions say 5, in my experience that's sufficient to produce a smudge, not a star. Remove the nail in one quick motion and admire you nice neat star.

5. Repeat nine times.

6. I have no idea if this is necessary, but I give the polish 2-3 minutes to dry before top coat. Better safe than sorry - I'd hate to mess up a pretty star!

So how easy is that, really? I think the results look kind of intimidating, but it's really not hard to do. The hardest parts for me have been (i) centering the star, which I discovered is easiest to do by getting the center of the nail hooked on that ridge properly before raising the rest of it up, and (ii) getting a good star by disregarding the five second instructions. So now you know what I know about getting around the parts of the process that I had to learn through trial and error.

L'Oreal Star Magnets in Silver

Good morning, Dear Reader!

This morning I have a tentative announcement of the winner of the Black Tie Optional: it was Sunny.  I have yet to receive a reply to the notification email, so I'll wait until next Friday to hear from her.  If I don't be then, I'll randomly select another winner, but in the meantime, I'll hope for a reply.

Today I continued my efforts to take advantage of my new nubbins by using polishes differently, and today I chose L'Oreal Star Magnets in Silver.  A friend of mine got these for me a while back, and I had yet to use Silver, so it seemed like it was worth a try to see if the star pattern would center on my nails.  Indeed it did!

To use these polishes, I apply one coat as usual.  Next time I'll use a regular polish that matches the color as the first coat, as it's been established that using the precious 9 ml Star Magnet as the second coat only works just as well as using it for both coats.  It's the second coat where the trick comes in.  Here, I apply another coat to one nail, hold the nail up to the magnet for eight seconds, then move on to the next nail until all ten have been painted and treated with the magnet.  I took pictures of the magnet for you to show you how it works - there's a little ledge on it to anchor the nail, and I use that holding my nail parallel to the magnet.

That's the process I used, and now I'll show you my results, which I admittedly prefer over the Funky French I had using another Star Magnet on longer nails.

 

 

I'm a sucker for a good silver, which this is, and I really love the strange effect the magnet brings to it.  This is a mani that makes me happy I have nubbins, at least for today!
