Blooming Marvellous

"Arranging a bowl of flowers in the morning can give a sense of quiet in a crowded day - like writing a poem or saying a prayer." Anne Morrow Lindbergh

I love keeping flower bouquets in my room, if I could I would buy a bouquet a week!

The florist I frequent the most would have to be:

Dunkeld Fruit & Flowers
(R30 for deliveries)

Address: Dunkeld West Centre, 279/281 Jan Smuts Avenue

Tel: 011 341 0343 or 011 341 0101

I could browse and smell around here for ages and they have a huge selection of florals. Once you've chosen the flowers you like someone will arrange them in a beautiful bouquet for you!

Roses at Dunkeld; Stems with blossoms adorning the table at a cocktail evening I had at my place

Once Home:

Best Way To Cut Flowers:
Flowers keep best when cut with a sharp knife (un-serrated) and plunged immediately into water. Always make a cut on a slant, as it exposes more stem surface area.
Remove leaves that will be under water in the arrangement.
Do not remove thorns from roses as it tends to shorten their life.

When the flower stem is cut, a small air bubble forms at the end of the stem and is trapped. This acts like a barrier and prevents more water from getting up the stem - even if you replace the stem in water.
To prevent air bubble blocks, make a new stem-end cut while holding it in water. A small droplet of water will cling to the stem end as you transfer the rose to the vase. This prevents the bubble from re-forming.

Ways to keep cut flowers longer:

  • Use plain, lukewarm water for most cut flowers, but use cold water for bulb flowers, such as daffodils, hyacinths, and tulips.
  • Change the water every 2 days - don't just top it off. This is the single most effective thing you can do to keep your flowers looking fresh!
  • Keep flowers out of direct sunlight, and move them to a cool place at night.
  • Give daffodils their own vase - daffodil stems give off a compound that is toxic to other flowers.
  • Keep cut flowers away from fruit, which releases a gas that causes flowers to age faster.
How To Prolong Your Flowers Life:

All commercial floral preservatives contain the basic components of the life support system for the cut flower: a biocide (to kill the bacteria that insert pores into the stem & thus inhibit water from getting to the flower), an acidifier (helps water move up the stem more easily), and sugar (flower food).

I used this mixture every second day for the blooms I bought last week Sunday and they're still looking gorgeous!

FingerPaints Summer 2011

Good afternoon, Dear Reader!

I have swatches of FingerPaints Peace, Love and Summer collection for you today, which Sally Beauty Supply sent me to review.  Overall, it a great collection, but that's about the only generalization I can make, so I'll get on with showing you pictures and tell you about the polishes.

All You Need Is Color is a gorgeous teal glitter, which I wore after swatching yesterday.  It's comfortably thin to apply and opaque in two coats.  This is with one coat of top coat, which smoothed it out surprisingly well.

Give Pink A Chance isn't really giving pink a chance at all - it's more of a bright coral creme.  It's a very good consistency and was easy to control.  I used two coats here, one would probably be fine as a base for something else.

Groovy Green is a beautiful spring green shimmer.  The polish is somewhat thick and very well pigmented, so the first pictures I took of it looked strange.  I'm wearing it today, so I took a new picture with top coat.

Outta Sight Orange is pretty much what I wanted the Sephora Cheetah orange to be.

Psychedelic Sunshine is super sparkly fine glitter in a yellow jelly base.  It's very thick, and applying it was a bit more challenging than the others.  I tried it on the day it arrived when Chanel Mimosa didn't wow me, and I also have a swatch of two coats of Psychedelic Sunshine alone.

Here's one coat over Mimosa.  Looks like the light in the picture below was different.

The last one is Peaceful Purple, a really nice purple glitter.  This one was thinner, like the teal, and easy to apply.  Here's two coats of it.

As usual, I'm thrilled with a seasonal collection from FingerPaints.  Be on the lookout for these at Sally Beauty Supply soon.

That's the update for today, Dear Reader.  I'm told yesterday's post and comments will return - there have been some Blogger troubles and it keeps disappearing and reappearing, but I can't do a single thing about it either way.  Until next time, love and nail polish to you!

Zoya Summer 2011

Hello, Dear Reader!

I'm writing this in advance in order to pass these pictures on to you as soon as I can - Zoya sent promo images of their Summer 2011 collections this week that can't be published until this very minute.

First up is the limited edition collection of Mod Mattes.  The colors are Phoebe (bright blue), Lolly (pink), and Mitzi (bright green).  There are no verbal color descriptions, so I don't know if they're creme or shimmer.

Zoya Mod Mattes

There are two additional regular collections as well, Sunshine and Summertime.  Here are Zoya's promo image and color descriptions for each:

Zoya Sunshine and Summertime
Zoya Sunshine and Summertime Collections for Summer 2011
ZOYA SUMMERTIME COLLECTION
·         Sooki (ZP552) - Bright, clean, crisp cool cherry red cream with a subtle jelly finish. For an irresistible, attention-grabbing red nail.
·         Tamsen (ZP553) - Medium warm brick red with strong orange tones with an opaque cream finish. A special red that is both enticing and mysterious
·         Areej (ZP554) - Pink with an opaque cream finish. A pink for when you want a bold pop of color but not something neon-bright.
·         Kieko (ZP555) - Warm, red toned dusty light purple with berry tones with an opaque cream finish. A nice alternative to pure pink or berry, especially flattering on warm skin tones.
·         Mira (ZP556) - Blue toned medium purple with dusty lavender tones and an opaque cream finish. For a muted yet colorful purple that isn't too dark.
·         Breezi (ZP557) - Soft, dusty, medium cerulean blue with an opaque cream finish. A super chic  high-fashion denim look for nails.

ZOYA SUNSHINE COLLECTION
·  Reva (ZP546) - A cool toned strawberry red with glowing golden metallic sparkle. A very rich and luxurious looking gilded red.
  • Kimmy (ZP547) - Gleaming metallic candy apple red brightened by gold sparkle. Not your usual red shimmer- this one has a fiery attitude.
  • Apple (ZP548) - Luminous yellow-toned apple green packed with gold metallic sparkle. A dimensional green that's clean and bright.
  • Tanzy (ZP549) - Light, bright tangerine orange with yellow gold metallic sparkle. A sunny orange that's easy to wear year-round.
  • Rica (ZP550) - Warm light coral with pink and orange tones and heavy gold metallic sparkle. An alternative to flat corals for when you want to shine.
  • Faye (ZP551) - A bronzed mauve with purple and brown undertones flooded with right gold sparkle. A unique gilded shade that will work in any season.
Those descriptions are copied and pasted, so the text color and formatting are not mine.  I figured neither your nor I care enough about the color of the text or formatting inconsistencies to warrant the effort involved in adjusting things, so I didn't.

I'm interested in seeing the real colors - I don't really have a sense of the two regular collections from the promo picture.  The image for the new mattes, assuming it's accurate, gives a clear picture of the colors, but to be completely honest with you I was pretty done with mattes some time ago.  They're great summer shades, I just can't get past the weird feeling of the surface of matte nail polish and I'm finished trying, so I'll skip those altogether.  The others look like there's potential there.

There's nothing else new and exciting to tell you about, so I'll be nice and just wrap it up. Until next time, Dear Reader, love and nail polish to you!

THANK YOU, Dear Reader!  I was so sad having to post about the addition of new ads, for which I was prepared to take criticism, but it seems that many of you have responded by clicking the ads.  Each click is putting several cents toward paying the May utilities so I can begin to worry about June rent, and I really can't thank you enough.  You're giving me a light at the end of the tunnel, and I very deeply appreciate it.
